The 20 California students are preparing for Poetry Out Loud, the competition high-school competition that doesn't involve athletics but words. It's the state finals, and the day's champion will be California's Poetry Out Loud representative in Washington, DC in April 2008. They will face off--or "speak off," as the case may be--at the Secretary of State's auditorium in downtown Sacramento on Friday, March 14.

The floor of the expansive Memorial Auditorium in downtown Sacramento was almost completely full at the California Arts Council's statewide conference. The event included words from a futurist, a policy analyst, an arts education expert, table discussions and plans of action ... and a visit from Governor Schwarzenegger. (Photos available!)

Starting in 2008 for annual year 2007, all nonprofits have to file some kind of documentation with the federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Nonprofit organizations that do not file Form 990 (or the simplified versions of this form) for three consecutive years may lose their 501(c) status. This includes the small organizations that have less than $25,000 in their coffers.

The California Arts Council not only has new content and features available on the recently revised website, but we've got a completely new design as well -- design that prominently features revolving photos of the arts in California on the home page. We'd like to feature arts organizations throughout the state in this spot.
