Arwa Awan, a senior at Pacific Grove High School in Monterey County, took first place in the 2012 California state finals of Poetry Out Loud. Connor Ricketts (El Dorado County) was the first runner-up and Shane Anderson (Nevada County) was the second runner-up. SEE PRESS RELEASE
The teachers who participate in Poetry Out Loud work hard to bring the program to a wide variety of students in their schools and beyond. This year the California Arts Council acknowledged their hard work and highlighted one with the first annual California Poetry Out Loud "Hero" Award: James Bruce of San Luis Obispo County.
