Welcome, Maya; congratulations, Mariana!The California Arts Council is delighted to introduce, welcome and congratulate staff members in their new positions!  Maya Austin is our newest Program Specialist, coordinating our Arts and Public Media program, and soon to be coordinating our Organizational Development, Professional Development, and Statewide and Regional Networks programs.
Maya comes to us with a multitude of experience in the nonprofit arts field and grants administration. She was a grants administrator and archivist at the U.S. Department of the Interior for the National Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act Program, and for nine years served as Senior Manager for the Indigenous Program at Sundance Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the discovery and development of independent artists and audiences. She has also worked for the Southern Ute Cultural Center & Museum in Ignacio, Colorado; the Academy Film Archive, Los Angeles, California, and the UCLA Cataloging and Metadata Center; and currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Board for Vision Maker Media, a non-profit organization that empowers and engages Native peoples to develop, produce, and distribute their stories for public television. Maya is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, with degrees in history, film and moving image archive studies. Maya can be reached at maya.austin@arts.ca.gov.  Mariana Moscoso has been promoted as our new Arts in Corrections Program Manager, having previously served as the interim in this role prior to their work as the AIC Program Analyst. In their new role, Mariana manages program development, activities, contracts and procurement for the Arts in Corrections program, and serves as liaison for our interagency partnership with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Mariana identifies as a tricultural genderqueer artivist dedicated to an intersectional, racial equity framework with an emergent strategy approach. Their personal life and professional life are deeply informed by this framework and approach. Mariana is fascinated by the impact of language and has spent countless hours writing poetry and learning to speak several languages, including Tzutujil (Mayan), Italian, and German. They hold a master's degree in art history from the University of California, Davis, with an emphasis on gender studies. In their free time, they enjoy daydreaming, joking around and making art with their daughter, reading philosophical texts, and grassroots organizing in the areas of environmental justice, decolonization, and transformative justice. May 15: Create CA Webinar Spotlights Arts Ed for EquityAn upcoming webinar from Create CA makes the case for the relationship between the arts and student success. Reach for the Stars: Arts-based Pedagogy as a Pathway to Excellence and Equity, explores the possibilities of tapping into student potential and living truths through the arts, creating a path to both excellence and equity. The webinar features Dr. Yvette Jackson, Bryonn Bain, and Skye Walker as speakers. More information and registration are available here.
AFTA launches Facebook group for Leaders of Color NetworkAmericans for the Arts has recently added a Facebook group to broaden connections and support for people of color working the arts and culture field. The Facebook group joins their portfolio which includes the Leaders of Color Forum, a professional development program; the quarterly Coffee Talk series on ArtsU, showcasing leaders in the field in conversation, sharing their insights and experiences; and a dedicated member listserv.
